Paying by card

Whether a card is the usual way to pay here, from World Bank Global Findex surveys. It describes the country, never a particular shop or a particular card.

Cards in hotels and cities, cash for the rest

59% of adults pay in shops by card or phone.

Pay by card. Foreign cards settle at the tourist rate, which is far better than changing cash at a bank, and the old street-rate advice is out of date.

  • If a terminal offers to charge you in your own currency, decline and pay in the local one. The convenience rate is set by the merchant and is always worse.
  • American Express and Discover are thin outside hotels, airports and chains almost everywhere. Carry a Visa or Mastercard as well.
  • These figures are national. A capital is more card-friendly than its country, and a village is less.

World Bank Global Findex Database. What adults there say they pay with, not a count of shops.
